Univ.Prof. Mario Pesendorfer, Ph.D.
Professor of Forest Ecology
BOKU University
Univ.-Prof. Mario B. Pesendorfer, Ph.D., has been Professor of Forest Ecology at the Institute of Forest Ecology, BOKU University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, since April 2025. In addition, he has been External Faculty at the Complexity Science Hub in Vienna since November 2025, and has served as a Research Associate at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, D.C., since June 2016. Prior to his current professorship, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher and later Senior Scientist at the Institute of Forest Ecology at BOKU University (2019–2025), following a postdoctoral appointment at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, New York (2014–2019). He received his Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution & Behaviour from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 2014, after completing a Mag.rer.nat. degree in Biology (Zoology) at the University of Vienna in 2007. His research examines the ecology and evolution of forest communities, with a particular focus on tree and bird demography and behaviour. Combining long- term studies, field experiments and modelling approaches, his group investigates the drivers and consequences of synchronised seed production in trees and its effects on the dynamics and management of plant and animal populations.
